Chapter 9
The small prop plane hit a patch of turbulence and Clark reflexively grabbed the armrests of his seat. He didn’t want to have a panic attack in front of Maren but he felt one coming on. The business jet they’d taken between airports was alright, but for the final leg of the journey, they had to take a small prop plane in order to land on the grassy runway at the ranch. Ever since his mom had died in a plane crash taking the very same route back to the ranch, Clark had hated flying. Good thing Tom was a great pilot, though it did little to calm Clark’s nerves when he was in the air.
Pinching his eyes shut, he turned his face toward the window, hoping Maren wouldn’t see him like this. After saying a silent prayer, he focused on taking deep breaths and sending his mind somewhere else, where he knew he’d be calm and happy. Racing Penny around the track. Working around the office and the barn with Maren. Tugging Maren in close and her leaning in for a kiss…
His eyes popped open and he realized Maren had reached across the aisle and had taken his hand in both of hers. The gesture was comforting and intimate. He didn’t like to let himself be vulnerable in front of many people but Maren made him not feel weak for having a weakness.
“It’s alright. Tom said we’re almost there.” Maren ran her thumb across Clark’s knuckles and that helped bring him fully into the present. “Take deep breaths and roll your shoulders. That’s what I have to do when I feel nerves coming on.”
Clark’s blood pressure returned to normal and he leaned his head back against his seat. “Thanks,” he said feebly. “I still don’t like to fly after…you know.”
Maren nodded, not taking her eyes off his face. “I know. It’s totally understandable.”
“I’m not the worst one, though. You should see J.J.”
Maren chuckled softly. “You and your brothers. Is everything always a competition between you guys?”
Winding his fingers between Maren’s, he made it clear that he wasn’t going to let go. The corner of Maren’s lips twitched and she only tightened her grip. “You’ve never had brothers before.”
The plane descended onto the runway and Clark could see a Jeep parked at the end for them to drive up to the house. He thought about making arrangements for them to take a sleigh ride back but he thought better of it. The last thing he wanted to do was scare off Maren by being overly romantic before he had a chance to subtly work his charms on her. He had a feeling that spending some time at the Kelly Brother’s Ranch, soaking up all the Christmas vibes of the house would soften Maren. It was a sight to behold when the Christmas decorations were out.
They thanked Tom, who helped unload their luggage, and Clark grabbed both their bags, putting them in the backseat. Maren climbed in the passenger side and looked out the window, soaking in their surroundings.
